History of Snooker Scottish Open

This tournament was initially called as the International Open and Players Championship.

In 1981 – This tournament has begun as the International Open. It was organized at the Assembly Rooms in Derby.

Until 1984 the event was sponsored by Jameson Whiskey.

In 1985 – This event was renamed as the Goya Matchroom Trophy. The reason behind the new name of this event was sponsored from Matchroom and Goya.

In 1998 – This event again got a new name in the year of 1998. Now, the event was renamed to Scottish Open.  It was sponsored through the regal brand of Imperial Tobacco.

In 2003 – The event was moved to Royal Highland Centre in Edinburgh.

In 2004 – It has become the final event in LG Electronic tours. In the same year, this event was renamed as Players Championship. At that time, the event was sponsored by the Daily Record. It was held at the SECC in Glasgow.

It has become the second ranking event after the world championship. Till 2004, it was remained as a ranking event. Due to some contractual issues, this event was dropped. Later on it was classified as the part of the Players Tour Championship.

In 2015 – Barry Hearn broadcasts a new announcement regarding Snooker Scottish Open. He announced that the tournament will return in the 2016/17 season and it will be a part of “Home Series”.

The Snooker Scottish Open 2016

The snooker Scottish open 2016 was the 11th Ranking event. It has been started on 12th of December. Richard Beese and other snooker lovers were really excited about this tournament. The 2016 Scottish Open is a professional ranking snooker tournament that was ended on 18 December 2016. It was played at the Commonwealth Arena in Glasgow, Scotland. A new “Home Series” was introduced in 2016 – 2017 season.

Winner of the Tournament – Marco Fu

The winner prize money of this Snooker Scottish Open 2016 was £70,000. Marco Fu became the winner of this tournament by beating John Higgins. The winner of Scottish open has also awarded the Stephen Henry Trophy.  This trophy was named in honor of Stephen Henry, who was a Scottish seven time world champion.

Recently, Marco Fu became the winner of Snooker Scottish Open 2016. Marco Fu believes that this was the best winning of his career till now. He has a complete stunning 9-4 victory over John Higgins in the Scottish Open final. It was held at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow. The highest world ranking of Marco Fu’s carries is sixth.

Richard Beese is inspired by the victory of Snooker Scottish Open star Marco Fu. The sport has become increasingly popular in China.  Marco Fu said that “It was a great occasion and I managed to play some good match snooker.
